"Staind's "Confession Of The Fallen" is a conventional neo-metal album that's not altogether unpleasant, but it's unlikely to leave a lasting impression."

"Confessions Of The Fallen" is Staind's eighth album. In a career spanning almost 30 years, it's a respectable record for this long-established neo-metal band. This is all the more remarkable given that few of the standard-bearers of this genre, which was very much in vogue in the early 2000s (Korn, Limp Bizkit, Linkin Park...), continue to officiate today. Perhaps the style has gone out of fashion, or perhaps it's the bands themselves who have grown tired of it.

Weary, Staind is not, as this latest album is in the vein of its predecessors. The content of "Confession Of The Fallen" is true to expectations, full of energy, catchy riffs and catchy choruses. However, Staind is one of the pillars of the neo-metal genre and he doesn't take any risks. The band offers us what it knows how to do, nothing more, nothing less. We can't blame them if they feel they've been given the mission of meeting a demand, but that's to the chagrin of a fringe of listeners looking for a little more originality.

The recipe, then, is to mix all the ingredients of commercial neo-metal and give the audience something to headbang and sing along to with a chorus formatted for the FM airwaves. The album kicks off with 'Lowest in Me' and its natural harmonies, reminiscent of Machine Head's 'Davidian'. There's nothing wrong with that, of course, but the problem is that as soon as you get into the song, you're treated to an obvious chorus that makes you want to move on to the next track. That said, radio-friendly tracks never actually last long enough to really get bored.

Don't get us wrong, "Confession Of The Fallen" isn't a bad album, but it's sorely lacking in spontaneity, even if the occasional growl spices up a passage to remind us that Staind knows how to play hardball. It's a pity, though, that this only slightly scratches the glossy veneer of a commercially-oriented hit.

OTHER REVIEWS
SIGUR ROS: Atta (2023)
OTHERS - A fairly classic opus in the Sigur Ros discography, "Atta" could just as easily be described as a majestic and contemplative work as a boring and soporific exercise.
FIXATION: More Subtle Than Death (2023)
ALTERNATIVE ROCK - For a debut album, "More Subtle Than Death" is a success and should enable Fixation to attract a certain fringe of the Metal public, fans of bands like Pop Evil, 30 seconds to Mars or Bring Me The Horizon.
