"Oxymorrons' 'Melanin Punk' is a rather uneven fusion of rock, metal and hip hop, despite its good intentions."

Oxymorrons are one of a number of American groups who dare to mix rock and hip hop, demonstrating that music on the other side of the Atlantic is often more adventurous than in France, where the genres seem rather compartmentalised. So what does this cocktail of styles, entitled 'Melanin Punk', achieve?
From the very first notes of the album, an irrepressible energy is communicated to the listener, marking the tone of this latest production. The Oxymorrons, always stingy with convention, skilfully juggle genres, fusing punk, hip-hop and a subtle dose of funk. The album opens the door to a world of sound where diversity reigns supreme, offering a musical experience in the form of a joyous mess. Right from the start with 'Enemy', you get the feeling that this is an album in tune with the times, packed with sound effects and tampered vocals ('Head For The Hills'). While this may appeal to the more open-minded among us, purists may be allergic to it.
The whole thing is polished but seems far too wise or smooth to be totally convincing. The melodies are all very well calibrated ('Look Alive', 'Last Call'), if not too much so. Everything moves fast, too fast at times. Good ideas are cut off in the middle of development, as in 'Insomnia', one of the album's best tracks in terms of balanced fusion work, but which lacks consistency. However, it has to be said that in this melodic search, the tracks are effective but, because of this lack of relief, they are forgotten as soon as they are listened to.
Despite some interesting moments, the whole sometimes lacks coherence, leaving the listener with a mixed impression. Fans of the band will probably appreciate this new addition to the Oxymorrons discography, but for some listeners, the experience could be perceived as uneven. - Official website
