"The heart of everything" is the album of Within Temptation's comeback, three years after "The Silent force" and a rather sumptuous live DVD. Sharon Den Adel, the singer, took the time to have a child with her companion and guitarist of the group, Robert Westerholt.
On "The Silent Force", the band chose to simplify its music by giving it a more pop character while keeping a characteristic symphonic aspect. While this was met with harsh criticism, the public followed. It must be admitted that despite this small loss of soul, Within Temptation has always been able to release quite unstoppable tracks accompanied, it is true, by a few tracks that serve as fillers, a feature inherent to pop albums.
With "The heart of everything", the band decided to continue in this line. Its music is thus calibrated to instantly please the new generation of fans released in recent years as well as radio stations, unfortunately to the detriment of his own musical identity that can be felt far away. It must be admitted that the band succeeds well in this task, helped by a huge production and some very good tracks cleverly placed in the album.
'The Howling' is an ideal opening track featuring a high-flying symphonic metal with an epic side. It should be noted that this title was used for a video game: the Spellborn Chronicles. The single 'What have done' presents an image of the very commercial band with Life of Agony singer, Keith Caputo as guest. It is obvious that the track was composed to be boosted in radio and the similarity with Evanescence's 'Bring me your life' is quite striking.
Then, we sail between quality symphonic metal as in the excellent "Hand of sorrow" enhanced by a very good rise in power and pop metal acting as a hole filler. 'The cross' is thus very ordinary with a rather weak vocal line, just like 'Final destination' which never takes off despite its orchestrations. The same is true for 'All I need', a slightly sticky ballad, which would make a good second single if the band continues along the path set by the first. Fortunately, 'The true beneath the rose' saves the end of the album in a very beautiful way with its epic touch reminiscent of the great era.
Within Temptation therefore offers an honest album, perhaps a little more efficient and homogeneous than its predecessor. The band is comfortable in its genre and the very good tracks on the album manage to make you forget a rather chaotic ending. Let's hope now that he doesn't regret having been so lulled by commercial sirens, unlike an After Forever who has kept his musical soul while evolving... - Official website
