The third solo album in three years for Pretty Maids frontman Ronnie Atkins, the aptly named "Trinity" demonstrates that the man is not letting his long illness get the better of him. Taking advantage of his hiatus from his favorite band - due, he claims, to some tension with fellow guitarist Ken Hammer - he is composing opuses that allow him to indulge a passion he considers curative.

This new effort is more Heavy than the previous ones, which the Dane acknowledges. Of course, melodic impact is sought after as usual, with Ronnie Atkins setting this principle as a requirement. For him, a good song has to be melodious, no matter what its style, and he even admits to having listened to Electric Light Orchestra when he was a youngster, whose sound is far removed from the hard/metal rock in which the artist has been evolving since his debut in the early 80s.

In the midst of strong tracks, the listener will not be surprised to come across a truly AOR song - the upbeat 'If You Can Dream It', which exudes a welcome positivity. Ronnie Atkins insists on injecting optimism into his compositions as often as possible, as this is also part of his fight. His interpretations, guided by a raging force that can transform itself into an almost sentimental delicacy, are flawless. Asserting that he devotes particular care to his voice, he thanks the heavens for still being able to sing despite his lung torments, hence the other meaning, religious this time, of this album's name.

"Trinity" is a succession of remarkable moments, including 'The Unwanted', which, despite its very 90's keyboards, could be described as 21st century AOR, and the shifting 'Shine', with its highly infectious chorus. Let's also mention the (almost) ballad 'What If', from which some Queen-like swirls escape (what a lovely piano!), and the dark 'Raining Fire', where we cross paths with Savatage and Kamelot.

"Trinity" should delight fans of Pretty Maids, but also all music lovers who appreciate melodic hard/metal, with its alternately powerful and sensitive guitars, galvanizing melodies and poignant, morally uplifting flights of fancy.
