"The Fall Of The Shrines" is Oblivion Protocol's debut album, and it's a successful debut to say the least. A debut album doesn't necessarily mean that the band is a novice, as the musicians have all been through the ranks beforehand: with Threshold for singer-keyboardist Richard West, Within Temptation for guitarist Ruud Jolie, Devin Townsend for drummer Darby Todd and Darkwater for bassist Simon Andersson. And it's clear that the band didn't discover progressive music yesterday, as evidenced by the obvious influences of Steven Wilson, progressive bands from the 70s and even more recent ones such as Haken.

Oblivion Protocol's production is very pleasant to listen to, so well articulated that the 42 minutes pass without you even noticing. But what if that wasn't the album's weak point? Only 42 minutes for a progressive album is a bit short. All the more so as you can feel that the band has something to day, as evidenced by the fine work behind the story told in the background, framed by the sublime tracks 'The Fall' part I & II.

The rest of "The Fall Of The Shires" is equal to the task, with a well-balanced alternation between energetic and more ethereal phases. Special mention must go to the magnificent 'Public Safety Broadcast', which takes us on a journey. But then again, it's a journey we'd have liked to have taken longer...

"The Fall Of The Shrines" is an album which, without being revolutionary, has its place in the cloud of new releases for September, but which will have to prove its worth if Oblivion Protocol is to go from promising band to must-have.

Première fois que je vois un album de metal progressif démarrer par une ballade.

EDGE OF FOREVER: Ritual (2023)
MELODIC HARD ROCK - Edge Of Forever's "Ritual" is a melodic hard rock/heavy rock opus that's pleasant to listen to, but lacks impact over time.
URNE: A Feast On Sorrow (2023)
METALCORE - Produced by Joe Duplantier, "A Feast On Sorrow" is capable of seducing both technical enthusiasts and those with a sensitivity to dramatic impulses.
