Tempt Fate is a band from France, who play harsh, violent music in the tradition of Napalm Death, Morbid Angel or Benediction for the historical fringe, and Aborted or Benighted for recent developments. The band's members include Quentin Geniez (ex. Stormhaven) and Pierre-Louis Riff (Nervengeist), which perhaps explains the abundance of melodies wrapped in leaden rhythms. The band's first album ("Human Trap") received good reviews. Their new production, "Holy Deformity", promises to be rough, dark and heavy, with thrash tones and themes that challenge beliefs. In short, a revolting, crushing record.
Our times are extreme: some want a return to religion, while others would like to eradicate all belief. It's this second battle that Tempt Fate wages, a kind of secular crusade aimed at putting the human back at the center of the world. "Holy Deformity" smashes everything in its path in a kind of great release, then celebrates a black mass in order to purge one's inner demons... the latter often being gods ('God Ends Here'). Against a back of powerful riffs, the band offers a score in the tradition of Aborted, but without the subliminal speed, and with the added heaviness.
From the very first track ('Deadlights'), energy pervades the record. The double pedals are impressive, the blasts sprinkled with precision, while the vocals growl like Benediction. There's no mercy for theists. Surprisingly, soft harmonies abound, with melodies scattered here and there like leaves in the angry wind. The guitar notes of 'G.I.D' surprise the ears, while those of 'Holy Deformity' are at times bluff and technical. The solo parts alternate between harmonized passages reminiscent of Iron Maiden, grating dissonances reminiscent of Suffocation and shredding techniques worthy of Spawn Of Possession.
Tempt Fate is a tank that crushes everything in its path. "Holy Deformity" offers a good moment of virulence mixed with sweetness and impeccable technique. The record goes by surprisingly fast. In all simplicity and with a great application for their dark art, the frenchies publish an enjoyable album with its share of strong moments and punches.
