What else can we expect from Ozric Tentacles than the gentle dose of galactic euphoria to which we've become accustomed? We could get tired of an unchanging recipe made up of guitars releasing a stream of notes that sound like soap bubbles and swaying rhythms that are all mellow roundness, but that's not the case, even when the Englishmen verge on indigestion, as witnessed by "Technician Of The Sacred" (2015), which is almost too generous.
Like its three-year-old predecessor ("Space For The Earth"), "Lotus Unfolding" has the good taste not to cram more than fifty minutes into a tight menu. Which of course doesn't mean that the six compositions that fill it share the same format, with the exception of two of them, which are surprisingly short for the band. In fact, as usual, Ed Wynne and his band knit a meditative vault that loop to infinity, a veritable invitation to the elevation of the soul on a sacred quest through the volutes of colorful Hinduism.
'Storm In A Teacup' is an ideal start to the listening experience, a launch pad to inaccessible celestial spheres where the musicians' bouncy virtuosity combines with velvety ecstasy. We're on familiar ground here, but that's all right: this effusion, more effective than dozens of sessions of sophrology, feels so good! Preceded by an elastically curved 'Deep Blue Shade', 'Lotus Unfolding' takes us on a tender, relaxing journey to the Orient, guided by a soaring flute and joined by a six-string that seems to float in an amniotic ether against a back of padded percussion.
Catchier but no less hypnotic, 'Crumplepenny' is (relatively) steeper, before curling up in the cosmic, transcendental effluvia of a vaporous synthesizer. Nimbed in oriental aromas, the guitar reigns supreme throughout 'Green Incantation', which is both pulsating and limpid, and concludes with 'Burundi Spaceport', whose short duration doesn't channel its sensory bubbling.
With no (un)pleasant surprises, "Lotus Unfolding" delivers a pure concentrate of Ozric Tentacles, a galactic fragrance. If the loyal fans will be seduced, the rest of us are invited to discover this cottony music which, in these anxious times of gloom and war, makes up for all remedies. - Official website
