Following the success of "Poison Stuff", which received very positive reviews, Black River Sons are back with a line-up that has been halved. With a new lead guitarist and a new bassist, the French band arrives with a new opus entitled "Skins", which many have been waiting for to confirm the hopes born four years ago of an album fragrant with southern rock and dusty overcoats.

Like the Americans of Black Stone Cherry, the quartet has decided to make a particularly marked artistic shift. Indeed, the guitar cavalcades and harmonies typical of Southern rock legends seem a long way off. Apart from the very ZZTop-like 'Don't Tell It Twice', the superb, crepuscular ballad 'The Road', behind which we can guess Bon Jovi's 'Wanted Dead Or Alive', or the bonus track 'Lone Boy', reserved for purchasers of the CD digipack version, on which the shadows of Lynyrd Skynyrd, Molly Hatchet or Blackfoot loom, there won't be much destined to fans of melodies from the American South.

However, it would be a mistake to turn away from this worthwhile "Skins". Admittedly, the music on offer here is much heavier and darker than what Black River Sons got us used to on their previous album, but it's no less interesting for all that. Guillaume, the new guitarist, unleashes a number of incendiary solos, both velvety ('Birds And Beast', 'Uncanny Land') and luminous ('Out Of Range', 'The Road'), while his bassist compatriot beats his instrument with power and dynamism. While some of the tracks suffer from a certain linearity, as a whole, the hairy, raging tunes and bluesy, groovy riffs ensure that this opus holds up perfectly despite the marked artistic shift it represents.

Surprising in its change of stylistic direction, "Skins" is nonetheless a dark, powerful and varied work that allows Black River Sons to confirm the extent of their potential. The arrival of two new members proves to be a real added value, opening up new horizons for a band that confirms here that it deserves to be followed by adventurous spirits and lovers of heavy, greasy ambiences alike.

DEATH METAL - Scar Symmetry hasn't changed its fundamentals, and with "The Singularity (phase II - Xenotaph)" offers a majestic, emotionally-coated, rock-solid record.
OZRIC TENTACLES: Lotus Unfolding (2023)
PROGRESSIVE ROCK - Perhaps unsurprisingly, "Lotus Unfolding" nonetheless demonstrates that Ozric Tentacles remains the best remedy for the gloom and anxieties of a deranged world.
