While their original band has been in a bit of a slump for a few years now, Volker Soehl and Johnny Beck, who play keyboards and guitar respectively in Sylvan, are producing their solo project under the name Violent Jasper. With their first release, 'Control', the duo, accompanied by a number of guest vocalists, explore feelings and emotions, questioning their interaction with the control of our existence.

The opening track 'Control' immediately sets the musical context for the album. A first piano theme, followed by a big guitar riff, prefigures a much calmer part where the piano unfolds its melody and accompanies the female voice, before a new riff closes the proceedings. Typical of Sylvan's style, these variations in mood and intensity guide all ten tracks on 'Control', in which the piano plays a central role, alternately carrying the melodic themes or providing inspired accompaniment for the various performers.

In a more flowing style, 'Dark Flow' offers a gentle opening section, rising slowly towards a finale where the violin plays a delicate solo against a back of grandiose keyboards, the perfect setting for Caro Von Brückenn to take up the theme, her voice carrying both gentleness and power. Marco Glühmann (Sylvan) lends his voice, as impressive as ever, first on 'Stay', as the ideal dialogue partner for his female counterpart, and then on the fantastic 'Desire', a track with an eerie quality, featuring a tense piano/voice opening before an explosion of violence reminiscent of the German band's early albums.

With 'Frontiers', Volker Soehl steps off the beaten track for a moment, with a jazzy piano middle section soberly accompanied acoustically, before returning to the path marked out since the beginning of the album, for a finale carried by a luminous guitar solo from his compatriot. The whole thing comes to a coherent conclusion with a reprise of the album's theme, again with this magnificent alternation of moods, concluded by a few seconds of silence to let the reflection run its course.

In just over 50 minutes, Violent Jasper follow in the footsteps of Sylvan's best and deliver a magnificent debut, and 'Control' is sure to delight die-hard fans.

MICK MARS: The Other Side Of Mars (2024)
HARD ROCK - Not entirely far removed from the work of Mick Mars in Mötley Crüe, 'The Other Side of Mars' nevertheless manages to stand out by sounding more modern and varied.
LUCIFER: Lucifer V (2024)
HEAVY METAL - In tune with his dark art, Lucifer recaptures the macabre, desirable lustre of his debut, with even greater charm and inventiveness.
