Often criticised for their lack of personality and ambition, Subsignal continues to make headway with his sixth studio album, and remains one of the pillars of German progressive rock. "A Poetry Of Rain" is in the purest Subsignal vein, with extremely melodic progressive rock.

The album opens with two tracks rich in catchy melodies, the rhythmic 'The Art of Giving in' and the more swaying 'Marigold', with orchestrations reminiscent of Toto. The vocal harmonies, a hallmark of the Germans since their early days, are another major factor in the charm of the tracks, with the warm, expressive voice of Arno Menses and the many backing vocals that accompany him. In the same vein, 'Impasse' and 'A Room on the Edge of Forever' feature acoustic guitars and interesting progressive melodies, with meticulously crafted arrangements.

Some of the more muscular passages on 'Silver (The Sheltered Garden)' and 'The Last of it's Kind' are reminiscent of Menses and Steffen's first band, Sige Even, but in a more metal vein that retains all the progressive verve so dear to the band. With 'Embers Part II - Water Wings', Subsignal also offers us a follow-up to a track from 2011's 'Touchstones' album, which unfortunately bears little relation to the first part, which was enhanced by languorous violins.

Still largely inspired by Yes, Rush and Kansas, 'A Poetry of Rain' profits impeccable production, allowing each instrument to make its contribution with a fine balance. It is also melodically successful and technically infallible. And while some will rightly criticise it for lacking originality and risk-taking, it's still a pleasant listen, with well-crafted orchestrations and effective harmonies. A sure bet.

ROCK - A much calmer album than its predecessor, "There Is Nothing Left to Lose" reflects a carefree era for the members of Foo Fighters.
