Barely two years ago, a young band from France stunned the Music Waves staff with a debut album that exuded quality. This year, Synapse returns with a transitional EP, "Alter Echoes", to keep fans waiting for a second, full-length effort. The six tracks that make up the album are covers of a wide variety of titles having nothing to do with the progressive metal style developed in "Singularities".
"Alter Echoes" takes us from Mexico ('Bikina') to Norway ('Take On Me' by A-Ha), France ('Et Si en Plus Y a Personne' by Alain Souchon), Japan ('Force your Way' from the Final Fantasy VIII video game) and the USA. This round-the-world rereading is an exercise in which many bands have embarked, often without much success. Synapse's aim here was to retain the spirit of each song while giving them a metal color and a whole new dynamic.
Some of the tracks have simply been rearranged to retain a festive feel, such as 'Bikina', 'I'll Be There For You' or 'All I Want For Christmas Is You', all in keeping with the original spirit. Others, on the contrary, are a little more jostling, such as the highly successful 'Et Si En Plus Y a Personne', in which Alain Souchon denounces religion as a pretext for war, which rings true today. Synapse, with its strength, puts a more dramatic spin on it with restrained emotion that rings true. The same is true of A-Ha's 'Take On Me', in which the band blurs the somewhat linear pop side in favor of a progressive rock atmosphere.
With this album, Synapse satisfies its fans with a certain audacity by tackling well-known titles, offering a sometimes surprising interpretation or others a little too wise. "Alter Echoes" shows that the band is not afraid of anything, and takes things seriously without taking itself too seriously. - Official website
