Dissona is a progressive metal band from Illinois, whose emotionally-driven music features powerful riffs and pulsating drums. After a seven-year absence, here is a three-track EP with a revealing name ("Dreadfully Distinct") that lays the foundations for a new, direct and modern musical direction, delivering a refined record between Ice Age, Fates Warning, Redemption and sprinkled with touches of Depeche Mode.
The feat is to offer three different faces on three tracks. Dissona has its feet in death, progressive, heavy and synth wave, or even Paradise Lost-like gothic metal ('Skinjob'). Its music is rooted in historical progressive as a nod to the past ('The ¨Prodigal Son' or 'Renaissance'). It oscillates between ancient and modern ('Renaissance') and goes off the beaten track, stretching genre boundaries ('Skinjob'). Throughout the EP, the piano is superb, the sharp, riffs ('The Prodigal Son') sometimes evoke Pantera ('Renaissance'), the intense vocals recall Tom S. Englund (Evergrey), while the brilliant solo are reminiscent of "Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence". But beyond the purely technical aspect, it's the melodies that hold the attention: soft, reassuring and using oriental sounds to raise a wind of warmth.
"Dreadly Difficult" blurs the lines, blending light and shade, intense guitars, harsh vocals and solitary phrases haloed by crystal piano. Dissona builds a pleasant progressive metal moment that inevitably calls for a sequel... - Official website
