On May 31, 2019, a musical vessel named "Union" takes off on a mysterious adventure, carrying with it passengers in search of new galaxies of sound. On board are Phil Monro at the helm of the guitar, Andy Robison in the vocal cockpit, and Clark McMenemy on drums. This space voyage places Ihlo alongside such modern progressive metal behemoths as TesseracT, Haken, Leprous, Distorted Harmony and even Periphery. Yet Ihlo is more than just a co-pilot, it's a crew with a unique destination.
If Ihlo's music is comparable to that of TesseracT and "Altered State" in particular, this similarity above all testifies to the band's virtuosity in the art of djent and thus underlines the versatility and quality of its work in this musical genre.
Its sound is so futuristic that even R2-D2 would be jealous. However, Ihlo's greatest achievement lies in their ability to blend grandiose melodies with heavy, brutal riffs. The result? An incredibly fluid, rhythmic and melodic musical odyssey, accompanied by electronic accents that will make you feel your heartbeat in space.
The real strength of "Union" lies in its composition. Leave aside debates about influences and programming, and concentrate on the magic that Ihlo distills through his songs. The album is packed with catchy choruses, flowing riffs and a structure that fits together like a galactic puzzle. Just listen to 'Union' or 'Reanimate' and you'll instantly understand Ihlo's secret formula for creating addictive songs.
In the second half of the album, Ihlo reaches his peak. Tracks like 'Hollow' are more textured and electronic. While 'Triumph' lives up to its name, with laid-back riffs blending with enchanting melodies, the shadow of Strapping Young Lad's 'Almost Again' can be felt.
The final tracks, 'Parhelion' and 'Coalescence', are the most successful. With its cosmic synth, thundering drums and fantastic break, 'Parhelion' will give goose bumps to fans of the style. The apotheosis is reached with 'Coalescence', which closes the album in the most beautiful way: this track is the perfect final synthesis of a grandiose album!
Ihlo is much more than the sum of its influences, and anything less than the highest score would not do justice to its creativity. There's a flash of genius shining through every note, every melody and every rhythm. So put on your space helmet, fasten your seatbelt, and get ready to fly off to a galaxy far, far away with Ihlo and his album "Union". - Official website
