Despite being 73 years old, Jim Peterik has produced one album after another like pearls, but always with a strong trademark. There's no denying his distinctive style and talent, but apart from Pride Of Lions' latest opus ('Dream Higher'), there's little point in looking back over each of his releases. At the start of 2024, the legendary co-founder of Survivor is back with his World Stage. Entitled 'Roots & Shoots - Vol.1', this new album brings together melodic rock legends (the Roots) and promising new talent (the Shoots), and as its name suggests, it's the first volume of what should be a two-part work.

On the classics side, we're joined by regulars Kevin Cronin (REO Speedwagon) and Don Barnes (38 Special). And there's no shortage of classics on offer. 'Dangerous Combination' and 'Last Dream Home' are both pleasant and predictable US AOR. 'Mend Fences' has the heaviness and darkness that should have made it a highlight of the album, but instead it highlights the two singers' difficulties. Whether it's Jim Peterik or Kelly Keagy (Night Ranger), their suffering is hard to hear. As for 'Friends Forever', performed with Mark Farner (Grand Funk Railroad), it is confusingly naive.

So it's up to the up-and-comers to make up for it and take over from their ageing idols. While they fulfil this mission without too much difficulty, there's nothing to get excited about here either: the host's compositions remain predictable and classic. On Wescoast waters, smoothness reigns. However, former American Idol contestant Ashton Brooke Gill gives a superb performance on the country and gospel ballad 'As I Am'. The duo of Lisa McClowry and Mike Mikulskis also come through with flying colours on the elegant power ballad 'Fire & Water'.

"Roots & Shoots - Vol.1" won't bother your guests as background music for an aperitif with friends, but it could be a swansong for Jim Peterik, who is desperately struggling to renew himself and come up with new productions of real interest. Sinking into hyper-classicism, this opus could be one too many for an artist who has done so much for a musical genre whose foundations he has helped to lay throughout his monumental career.
