After his eventful departure from Mötley Crüe in 2023, Mick Mars has not been idle for long, and is now back with his first solo album, "The Other Side of Mars". He has enlisted the help of keyboardist and songwriter Paul Taylor (Alice Cooper), Jacob Bunton and Brion Gamboa on vocals, Korn drummer Ray Luzier and Chris Collier on bass.
Unsurprisingly, "The Other Side of Mars" is a mix of classic hard rock influences and modern alternative elements. The album kicks off with two dynamic, heavy tracks ('Loyal To Lie', 'Broken On The Inside') before quickly slowing the pace with a number of mid-tempo tracks ('Killing Breed', 'Right Side Of Wrong') and a few ballads ('Alone', 'Memories'). There's no attempt at complexity in the structure of the compositions, the two main elements being the guitar riffs and the vocals. While Jacob Bunton's vocal range is fairly classic and all-purpose, Brion Gamboa's more rocky style gives the two songs he sings ('Killing Breed' and 'Undone') an Evergrey-style heavy metal feel, particularly in 'Undone', where the similarities are striking.
As Mick Mars has always said, he's not a shredder, so his soli are light and always melodic. He's backed up by a solid, well-balanced rhythm section that doesn't overdo the demonstration either, but adds a nice depth to most of the tracks. As for the keyboards, they are very discreet except on 'Memories', a gentle lull against a back of piano and keyboard strings.
Not entirely far removed from what Mick Mars was able to do in his original band, 'The Other Side of Mars' nonetheless manages to stand out by sounding more modern and more varied. Even if it doesn't redefine the genre, it allows us to appreciate a new facet of a legendary guitarist who has certainly been retired a little too quickly. - Official website
