"Mycelium" is the ninth album from Denmark's Manticora. Accustomed to progressive power metal in a fantasy and science-fiction universe, the band from Hvidovre has, over the last few albums, somewhat abandoned the progressive aspect to concentrate on an energetic power thrash.

After the short, epic intro track, the walls of guitars take over from 'Necropilitans', a dynamic track with catchy melodies. The pace doesn't throughout the album, and often accelerates, as on 'Demonday', 'Golem Sapiens' and the frenzied 'Beats Of The Fall'. The recipe is applied throughout "Mycelium", with very little respite, apart from "Angel of the Spring" and the piano-violin interlude "Equinox". Last but not least, the excellent epic finale 'Dia De Los Muertos' rounds off the album admirably.

On the production side, we regret that the vocals are a little subdued and the bass lacks roundness, drowned out by the constant walls of guitars, whereas Lawrence Dinamarca's organic drumming is treated in a manner commensurate with the band's ambitions, making the effort bearable even for those less accustomed to the hellish tempos that run through the album.

With "Mycelium", Manticora offers a thrash album that kicks ass in line with their latest productions. Reserved for fans of the genre and of the band, the album leaves little room for melodic digressions. It does, however, feature some wild solos and moments of instrumental bravura that are well worth listening to.
