Voice of Ruin is a Swiss band playing percussive and technical melodic death. Their previous album ("Archeron") was well received by Music Waves, despite a few reservations that seemed to be a handicap to the band's entry into the first division. Four years on, the band has released "Cold Epiphany", whose scathing outbursts may well lead to dazzling success.

Between gentleness and violence, fog and storm, "Cold Epiphany" is a varied record whose high point is its beautiful melodies. Simple and effective, they flourish in a powerful death soil born of Arctic winters, providing sharp riffs worthy of Arch Enemy. The vocals roar with power and the drums build intense rhythms that could split an ice floe in two ('Deathstar Rising'). At times bordering on thrash, like Carcass in its day, the album diffuses a searing energy whose dissonances are frightening touches in an opaque haze. Superb acoustic guitars adorn 'Cold Epiphany' and 'Prelude To A Dark Age', lending majesty to the strange, supernatural aura they exude, and their solitary interventions coat the songs with a deliciously sweet cream ('I, The Vile King').

But even with its many qualities - melodies, luminous solos and boundless energy - the opus flirts with classicism. "Cold Epiphany" is a record of spectral beauty, perhaps less rigid than its predecessor, more human perhaps, classic certainly, very pleasant to listen to.
