While the new kids on the instrumental guitar block are competing to stand out, vainly trying to consign the old legends they affectionately call boomers to the past, Plini is refining his style and continuing to try and bring everyone together. And he's one of the few people to have managed it in the last ten years or so. After the little gem of modern jazz-rock that was 'Impulse Voices', the Australian guitarist hits the nail on the head with a new EP, 'Mirage', which, in 23 minutes, allows him to set the record straight once again, namely that it's all very well to want to sound young at all costs, but the most important thing is to compose really good original tracks without denying your heritage.

Speaking of heritage, Plini's has never left any doubt, and his admiration for Joe Satriani is once again on full display on the track 'Aqua Vista'. The difference between his musical approach and that of his elder son lies much more in the rhythm of the track than in the guitar technique. That's where the modernity of Plini's sound lies. And it's his loyal and impressive rhythm section (Simon Grove on bass and Chris Allison on drums) that allows him to infuse each of his tracks with enough variety, particularly in the changes of time signatures, to make it a consistently interesting piece of music.

Of course, the Australian's risk-taking remains minimal and the musical direction of 'Mirage' remains clearly on the borderline between djent, prog metal and jazz ('The Red Fox', 'Five Days Of Rain'). All the more so since Plini has the good idea of crossing swords with Tosin Abasi of Animals As Leaders on the excellent 'Still Life', to clearly show that he belongs to the djent movement. But in style, it's impossible to find fault with this EP, a veritable demonstration of elegance, subtlety and class. There's barely a hint of the more introspective compositions on offer, including the magnificent 'Ember', a perfect example of the alliance between modernity and tradition.

With 'Mirage', Plini proves once again that he is an endearing and unique artist, capable like no other of combining past and present, never forgetting where he comes from and knowing, album after album, exactly where he's going.
