To celebrate thirty years in the music business, Syndone offers us this new album, "Dirty Thirty". Thirty years in the music business? That may come as a surprise, given that the Italians' first album, 'Spleen', was released in 1992, but that's what their official communication says.
"Dirty Thirty" is not entirely a new album. The successor to 'Kama Sutra' is a juxtaposition of previously unreleased tracks, rereads of previously released songs and hybrid songs mixing snippets of old tracks with original parts. For the covers, the band draws on 'Spleen' (1992), 'Inca' (1993), 'Melapesante' (2010), 'La Bella e la Bestia' (2012), 'Odysseas' (2014) and 'Mysoginia' (2018). The main new features are the magnificent opening track, 'Dirty Thirty', which sums up Syndone's art of composing romantic, passionate music (ah! Riccardo Ruggeri's vocals! ), 'Fight Club' and 'I Spit on my Virtue', more nervous and aggressive than usual, and the original parts of 'The Angel' and 'I Only Ask for a Super Glue'.
Syndone's compositions are alternately majestic, dramatic and melancholy, with the piano asserting its hold in a voluntarily orchestral setting, and others that are rhythmic and lively, simpler and more direct, something the Italians haven't been used to. Fans will certainly be surprised by the danceable accordion on 'Valdrada's Screen', the punk intro to 'I Spit on my Virtue' and the Elton John-like 'I Only Ask for a Super Glue'.
"Dirty Thirty" may be a patchwork quilt, but it manages to avoid sounding like one. Admittedly, like many, we'd have preferred an album made up entirely of new compositions, but Syndone pulls off this perilous exercise well, offering the listener a few crispy new tracks in the midst of interesting covers. - Official website
