Supergroup: a group formed by bringing together well-known musicians who are already members of a well-known band. Example: Six by Six, featuring Ian Crichton from Canadian band Saga, Nigel Glockler, drummer with English band Saxon, and Robert Berry, singer who worked with Keith Emerson in Project 3, and who plays keyboards and bass here. "Beyond Shadowland" is their second album.
Six by Six have not changed their formula, energetically camped around guitars obviously reminiscent of Saga ('Wren', 'The Mission') and carried by performers who deliver in keeping with their reputation: The rhythm is spot-on ('Spectre', as dynamic as you could wish), the vocals are well placed ('Sympathise', impeccable), the guitars cut through melodic hard rock ('Arms of a Word') or shred ('Spectre'), and there's an obvious pleasure in playing together ('Titans').
Straddling several styles, Six by Six appears at times close to AOR ('Outside Looking In'), at times very rocking ('Sympathise'), momentarily calmer ('Only You Can Decide' with its interwoven guitars), and occasionally ventures into more progressive territory ('One Step', evolving and varied).
The whole is easily accessible, with no real weaknesses ('except for 'Obiliex', which is a little all-purpose), impeccably produced and sympathetic, but in the end it doesn't stray far from familiar paths. This lack of adventure is the only criticism that could be levelled at an album that recaptures all the qualities of 2022's eponymous work. - Official website
