In recent years, Pain has not been a priority for the busy Peter Tägtgren. But things have changed, with the Swede leaving Lindemann at the end of 2020. And having relaunched Hypocrisy at the end of 2021, he is now putting Pain back on the road eight years after "Coming Home" to offer "I Am".
The record is very short (just over 40 minutes), with two tracks from Tägtgren's archives at the end. In spite of this, "I Am" is not a quick-fix record; in fact, it's quite varied and often delightful. First of all, there are some very direct songs, typical of Pain's style, carried by Peter's powerful robotic vocals. 'I Just Ped By', 'Not For Sale', 'The New Norm' and 'Revolution' are lively, with an irresistible dance-floor spirit and a rhythmic electro-metal edge.
'Party In My Head' and 'Push The Pusher' are catchy electro hits made for the stage. The choruses are immediate and the danceable side is effective. 'I Am' and 'Don't Wake The Dead' have a melancholy, pop-tinged side that blends well with the electro side, and is carried by Peter's seductive clean vocals. 'Go With The Flow' is closer to a synthetic 80's wave, with irresistible results. Among the recycled tracks, 'My Angel' is particularly seductive. The vocal duet between Peter and Cécile Simeone is effective, the latter bringing a good pop-variety edge to the electro machine.
"I Am" is a hard-hitting record that makes you want to dance. Pain is in fine shape and has relaunched his career with his electro-pop metal as seductive and immediate as ever. - Official website
