With "By Night" in 2022, Dagoba had surprised everyone. By adding electro and wave elements and a good dose of clean vocals, he had produced a catchier record. The record was correct and courageous, but - as is often the case in such cases - struggled to find its audience.
Two years later, Dagoba returns with "Different Breed". With a more classical cover, the record takes a step backwards. When the tone is strong, the band doesn't pretend: 'Distant Cry', 'Minotaur', 'Phoenix Noir' and 'Cerberus' are particularly hard-hitting tracks. The tone oscillates between thrash and death, with Shawter in wild, ferocious growl mode. In the midst of all this rage, there's a pinch of clean vocals to take the edge off before the charge resumes.
At the same time, Dagoba alternates tones more openly. 'Arrival Of The Dead' and 'Different Breed' have a fierce, violent edge, but the clean vocals take center stage with a touch of melody and even melancholy. In the vein of a more muscular "By Night", the mix is a real success. 'At The End Of The Day' and 'Vega' are even catchier, with a US metalcore feel and airy melodies supported by excellent clean vocals.
"Different Breed" is a convincing vintage. Dagoba offer a fine patchwork of their art, more powerful than on "By Night" but without denying anything, with a fine balance between brute force and strong melodies. - Official website
