Black Diamonds is a Swiss band born in 2004. Since their first effort four years later, they have released four albums. Three years after "No-Tell Hôtel", which was well worth the trip, "Destination Paradise" hits the shelves. Accustomed to progressing with each of their productions, will the Helvetians once again succeed in taking things to the next level?
If the charts in their home country are anything to go by, it looks like they've done just as well, since the album has just gone straight into third place, the position they reached with their previous offering. In any case, the boys from Saint Gall have not changed their style, and still offer a blend of glam and 80's melodic hard rock. Their references range from Crazy Lixx to Def Leppard, Reckless Love and Bonfire. But so many different bands come to mind when listening to this album that it would be tedious to mention them all.
Black Diamonds know perfectly well what melody and energy mean: "Destination Paradise" puts you in a good mood, and it doesn't take long to grasp all its charms. The Swiss don't make life difficult for themselves with their compositions; their Grail is to find the killer festive melody. And it has to be said that they often succeed, probably even more so than on their 2021 opus, with a hefty dose of very good songs. The full-fledged participation of guitarist Chris Blade - he had only appeared with the band during the "No-Tell Hôtel" sessions - may well have something to do with this new milestone.
If a few gems were to be mentioned, they would include the gotthard-like 'Run With Us', with its synthwave feel thanks to electronic drums, and the cover of Belinda Carlistle's hit 'Live A Light On'. It would be unfair to forget to single out 'Through Hell and Back', which evokes Bonfire, and the explosive 'Bottoms Up' close to Def Leppard, where bassist Andi Barrels tries his hand at vocals.
Happy and galvanizing, "Destination Paradise" should be a hit in the world of melodic hard rock. Let's hope Black Diamonds continue to take things to the next level with their next effort. If so, consecration should not be far off. - Official website
