For ten years now, Maverick have been honoring their native Northern Ireland with particularly successful albums. Three years ago, their melodic hard rock once again won over the crowds with a particularly pleasing “Ethereality”.

The Balfour brothers, on microphone and guitar, welcome back drummer Mike Ross. This return allows the combo to reunite with its original crew. The 2021 opus contained a number of catchy tracks, but the newcomer beats them all to the punch. Indeed, even if several listens are needed on some tracks for the magic to work, the whole work has an immediate impact. With a strong singer, cutting riffs, technically outstanding solos and a booming bass, the game was already up. In fact, it's won hands down, insofar as all these talents are placed at the service of compositions filled with punchy melodies.

The eleven tracks offer a variety of stylistic approaches, bringing together bands from different backgrounds: the easy-listening 'Sweet Surrender', with its Nordic hard melody, evokes the Finnish band One Desire, and 'Daywalker', whose riff is fiercely reminiscent of Dynazty's 'Presence Of Mind' while offering a Skid Row-like ambience. On the mid-tempo 'Evenfall', the alternative metal of Alter Bridge pays us a visit, and the power ballad 'Time' is close to what the French band Stonedrive were up to. For the record, it's interesting to add that 'We All Die Young', which brings the opus to an excellent close, is a cover of a Steelheart song already covered in “Rock Star” (2023) by Steel Dragon, the imaginary combo from the film.

So “Silver Tongue” is definitely a pleasant surprise, even if we knew the Northern Irish were capable of producing interesting work. They've now taken it a step further with this album, in which we discover a rich and delightful content as we listen to it. Fans of Tesla, Black Stone Cherry and Nickelback, but also of Nordic melodic hard rock, even melodically tinted 80's, this diversified opus is made for you.
