Corde is a French trio whose preferred instrument is the violin. Three years after their debut album, soberly entitled “Corde”, the band is back with “Schéma”.
The group refuses to confine its sounds to a pre-determined genre, even if Maxime Szczepanek's violin plays a key role. The contribution of his two accomplices is far from anecdotal. The previous album had already taken different stylistic paths. The idea was to take us on a journey into a shimmering world, and this second opus continues this thirst for the absolute. Electro, jazz, folk, rock, Corde explores all possible avenues without ever losing quality, landing on its feet every time and, above all, showing itself to be as unpredictable as possible.
Each track is like a small musical vignette with its own atmosphere and a deeply cinematic feel. 'The Old Guy Who Played Violin' and 'Murderer' become increasingly anxiety-inducing, and would be at home in a genre film. In contrast, the album opener 'Murmuration' is a majestic river running under the clouds. 'Misanthropia' features a dialogue between the various instruments, each of which succeeds in going off on a tangent at the crossroads of genres. The 36-minute listening time is ideal, and the instrumental aspect of Corde's music is not in any way prohibitive. However, we would have liked to know a little more about such mysterious tracks as 'Murderer', 'The Writer', 'Vicious Men' (especially as the latter ends with an eerie rattle).
Corde's album is a success from start to finish, giving the violin a new lease of life. The absence of lyrics to provide subtitles for this journey into another world is a little regrettable. - Official website
