"Wolfheart's beautiful “Draconian Darkness” cleverly mixes moods in a pure Nordic spirit."

With “King of the North”, Finland's Wolfheart have confirmed their status as one of the leading melodic death bands. Admittedly, they don't have the aura of Soilwork or Dark Tranquillity, but Tuomas Saukkonen's band are intelligent in their use of ambience and emotion.
The idea of returning to this universe with “Draconian Darkness” is tantalizing. It's a short record, but one that allows us to rediscover the different faces of Wolfheart. 'Evenfall', 'Burning Sky', 'Scion Of The Flame' and 'The Gale' mix moods in a Nordic spirit. The melodic death facet blends perfectly with melancholy, folk-tinged music reminiscent of Amorphis. The result is a beautiful epic force magnified by Vagelis's clear voice.
This clear voice becomes more present on tracks with a pure melodic death metal sound. On 'Ancient Cold', 'Death Leads The Way' and 'Grave', death power and catchy melodies combine in brilliant instrumental parts. The symbiosis of vocals is remarkable: Tuomas' growl is percussive with a cavernous guttural edge, and Vagelis manages pure, deep airy clean vocals. Throne Of Bones' and 'Trail By Fire' add a grandiloquent symphonic facet that's highly captivating. The violence is magnified by an orchestral aspect reminiscent of Dimmu Borgir.
“Draconian Darkness” is a great success. Wolfheart's talent for transcending genres is enormous, and the result is an enormous richness. Little by little, the band makes its place among the tenors, taking the best of each to create its own path. - Official website
