Four years ago, Chile's Sinner's Blood blew us away with their debut album “The Mirror Star”. To discover a melodic metal neo-combo from these South American lands was already quite surprising, but to see them immediately reach such a level of perfection left us stunned. They're back at the end of the year with their second release, “Dark Horizons”, which, despite its title, we hope is a good omen.
The Frontiers label had a nose for detail back in 2020 when its scouts spotted James Robledo and Nasson. The frontman and multi-instrumentalist didn't have much in the way of a calling card, but success sometimes comes from daring. Here, the band persists with this latest instalment of their adventures, and this second effort is even more accomplished than its predecessor.
"Dark Horizons” offers dark, epic and, above all, hyper-melodious metal, with its chiselled production and notable dynamism. Boosted by explosive drums and magnified by Robledo's particularly solid vocals, the eleven tracks presented here immediately entice the listener and shake his emotions with frenzy and pugnacity. The sharpness of the riffs is impressive, not far from power metal in its raw energy. But this contagious rage remains controlled by viscerally catchy melodies.
From the strong Evergrey 'Bound' and its Dream Theater-like break, to the speedier 'Enemy', reminiscent of Symphony X, to 'It Comes In The Dark' and its thrashy breakdown, the Chileans are amazing. From the shattering rhythmic pulses of “Not Enough”, to the magnificent “Redemption Of Fire”, which takes us on a progressive rollercoaster ride revealing pianistic névés and riff avalanches, they are close to perfection.
"Dark Horizons”, modern and massive, will break more than one neck, while cajoling with grandiloquence the lovers of beautiful melodies bursting with pathos. Sinner's Blood, despite its young age, is already making a splash in the pantheon of the genre's finest bands. Simply impressive. - Official website
