Scorched Earth is a death metal band based in south-west France, drawing its inspiration from both the historical fringe of the genre and heavy metal. After their first four-track release (“Scorched Earth”), the frenchies are back with “The Day Of The Damned”, featuring five new tracks and the four from their previous EP.
Fear sets in with disquieting sounds, reminiscent of a diffuse terror. Scorched Earth Pt. 1' launches concrete riffs, spitting glaviots supported by relentless drums. The band loves heaviness, and ventures into doom with rich, powerful, heavy riffs worthy of Black Sabbath ('Black Ones' or 'Scortched Earth Pt.1'). Scorched Earth's music thus distances itself from the descendants of thrash. Violence is accentuated by terrifying soundscapes populated by icy fears ('Flesh Eater', 'Dead Human Fest'), stripped-down guitars with scathing arpeggios ('Necrophalic Misanthropic Satan Worshipper') or judiciously placed dissonances ('Invocation', 'Dead Human Fest'). Occasionally, the band dares to take a step to the side, when heavy riffs and Iron Maiden-like melodies replace the fast and furious riffs ('Flesh Eater').
“The Day Of The Damned” is a sympathetic record that struggles to assert its difference. Admittedly, the individual songs are good, but the whole lacks the variation to inspire lasting support and reinforce discomfort. This is an album that will please fans of heaviness and lovers of anguish.
