Beardfish is a young Swedish band who already made a name for themselves with their second album "The Sane Day", released in 2006. This quartet, led by singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Rikard Sjöblom, is very productive as it comes back to us in 2007 with "Sleeping in Traffic: Part One". A second part is obviously planned to finish dealing with dichotomies such as day/night, light/darkness, dreams/reality... Don't be fooled by their smiling name. This band, recently signed to Inside Out, has acquired a musical maturity that stands in stark contrast to the band's apparent youth!

Beardfish, whose line-up has experienced some disruptions, evolves mainly around Rikard's compositions. They are in the register of an excellent progressive rock deeply tinged with seventies colors thanks to an exclusive use of vintage instruments: ARP analogical synths, light overdrive and fuzz...

Served by a very good production that superbly enhances the vibration and warmth of vintage instruments, melodies of rare beauty follow one another in entertaining progressions. In addition to the vintage colouring of the sound, the expressiveness of the vocals is also noteworthy, bringing an undeniable emotional dimension to the compositions. The pieces are complex in their structure but relatively accessible because they are very well arranged and coherent. The musicians have digested the classical recipes of prog to serve us them transcended. All the pieces thus conceal their small batch of treasures, whether it is on the level of the sound, of the superimpositions of instrumental layers or of the changes of ambiences. It is thus with surprise that we notice the end of the album, after an hour has passed.

In terms of influences, we can easily draw a parallel with Zappa, King Crimson, Gentle Giant and Deep Purple. Among the more recent productions, we can also sometimes compare the band to Porcupine Tree or Kaipa.

This album is a very nice discovery. Don't we say that the value doesn't wait for the number of years? BeardFish confirms this proverb and shows us that bearded bands are always successful. To all prog fans, sensitive to the seventies sounds, this album is a must-have!
