After an enthusiastic debut album and a trio experience captured on an acoustic live album, Gabriel Keller and his squad return with a second production evoking war in general, in all its absurdity and violence.

A dark opening evokes the subject in an epistolary way between a son and his mother, then the path towards light and hope emerges after a call for resistance in the face of barbarism.

Musically, Gabriel Keller takes up the codes of his first album with several themes follow one another, numerous melodic and rhythmic breaks, carefully crafted instrumental parts carried by a cutting guitar and catchy rhythms. Cello and violin solo punctuate a formidable first track, admirably served by the female vocals and backing vocals of the five performers credited on the album, with Emi B. once again at the head of the queue.

After such an appetizer, the rest of “Hope Despite Everything” never falters, and the progressive patchwork developed throughout its 54 minutes takes the listener on a continuous farandole in which the multitude of moods and melodic themes is sure to delight any fan of modern progressive. These include the power surge of 'The Guns are Approaching' after a beautiful vocal/acoustic guitar opening and a sumptuous second half, the bouncy pop-folk of 'Your Way', a few Floydian 'Echoes' in the sublime 'The Letter - part 2', a bit of blues on a ternary rhythm ('My Son') and here and there, a few solos in Gilmourian mode to accompany excerpts from speeches by De Gaulle or Churchill.

And just as the opener revealed the full breadth of Gabriel Keller's musical and sonic universe, 'Mahaut' concludes in style with multi-part female vocals and appropriate guitar/vibraphone accompaniment for a gentle epilogue.

With this superb album of modern progressive rock, Gabriel Keller delivers a score that's both accessible and full of variations and subtleties capable of satisfying any lover of intelligent music. Both the structure of the compositions and the beautiful arrangements, as well as the quality of interpretation and production, make “Hope Despite Everything” a real must-have.
