"With “Last to Run”, Pineapple Thief plugs the guitars back in and picks up the pace for five (too short) tracks of excellent quality."

During the making of “It Leads to This”, released in February 2024, Pineapple Thief took the decision to leave out certain tracks offering a different climate to that of the album. Having continued to evolve since then, these tracks now appear on a twenty-minute EP entitled “Last to Run”.

And listening to these 21 minutes of previously unreleased music, we have to admit that the mood here is somewhat different from that of the band's last albums. It all kicks off with 'All Because of Me', a real kick-ass single with not only an addictive melody, but also guitar tones that hark back to the band's early days. The electricity is (at last, some would say) turned back on, and the masterfully led rhythm section is completely in tune with this rock rather than pop track, whose alter ego can be found a little later on the album, with the powerful 'The World to Me'.

This is a departure from the standards of recent albums, which ended up sounding too much alike. Admittedly, we're still dealing with a collection of tracks formatted for radio airplay (which is unlikely to happen, if at all), but they break away from the usual pattern of power surges that end up standardizing their latest productions.
Here, we're generally in the presence of a more direct style, in which Pineapple Thief has rediscovered the strident guitar tones punctuated by a few well-felt riffs, and put some power back into the compositions. This doesn't prevent rhythmic breaks or changes of theme and intensity, as on 'Last to Run', the only truly progressive track on this mini-album.

These all-too-short minutes once again delight the ears with variety, beautifully crafted compositions and addictive refrains, all served up by a very clear production that enhances the whole.

Evidemment l'ensemble reste toujours sympathique.
