For more than ten years, Devin Townsend has been working behind the scenes on the most ambitious project of his career: “The Moth”, a rock opera that he will present in Groningen, Netherlands, on March 27 and 28, 2025, in two performances only (for the time being), accompanied by a 70-strong symphony orchestra and a 60-strong choir. By the Canadian's own admission, this will be a conceptual tour de force and the culmination of his entire career. In the meantime, like the workaholic he is, he continues to release albums that could be described as transitional. That was the case with the disappointing “Lightwork”, and it's still the case with this new album “Powernerd” ... except that this one, unlike its predecessor, is particularly successful.
Powerful choruses, big riffs, abundant production - there's no doubt that this is a metal-oriented Devin Townsend album, a far cry from the bland electro-pop of “Lightwork”. Here, every single composition is extremely effective, extremely melodic and designed to be immediately accessible. The album churns out a string of heavy little nuggets, forming a coherent and ultimately addictive whole.
Admittedly, Devin clearly rests on his laurels with “Powernerd”, and doesn't bank on originality in any way, with the notable exception of the monumental “Ruby Quaker” and its mix of country and metal. But even if fans of the master will find themselves in familiar territory when they listen to 'Falling Apart', 'Ubelia', 'Younger Lover' or 'Glacier', they'll find it hard to deny that Devin Townsend remains a hell of a composer, even when he stays away from progressive spheres.
The Canadian declared that he had composed this new album in a very short space of time, while going through painful family events. Yet it is joy that dominates the album from start to finish, and a disconcerting serenity exemplified by the magnificent 'Gratitude'. Once again, Devin Townsend takes the opposite side of his torments and demonstrates the therapeutic power of his own music. Transitional album or not, “Powernerd” is a morale-boosting record that allows the great Devin to stall fans, with class and elegance, until the release of “The Moth”. - Official website
