The brainchild of producer and multi-instrumentalist John Boegehold, Pattern Seeking Animals was - by virtue of its line-up - immediately likened to a Spock's Beard side-project. And the fact that the latter has been mothballed for seven long years now only reinforces the band's status as heirs to the family tradition, with the release of their fifth album, “Friends all Creatures”, just six years after the release of their first opus.
And the opening track, ‘Future Perfect World’, immediately sets the listener in best conditions, with an epic opening two minutes of instrumentals, followed by a succession of themes punctuated by powerful choruses, all delivered with a catchy melody supported by numerous backing vocals. The band then follows up with ‘Another Holy Grail’, a fitting title for this progressive rock marvel, which for twelve minutes leads us into a farandole of themes with a formidable progression packed with instrumental passages, culminating in a breathtaking symphonic finale.
More straightforward in their construction, the following tracks feature Eliza James's violin, particularly touching in a dialogue with Ted Leonard on the beautiful ballad ‘Down the Darkest Road’, but also on the more percussive ‘In My Dying Days’, a real single with an addictive melody which, in a slightly more distant era, would have had every chance of being offered some airplay. Structured in a similar format, ‘Days We'll Remember’ once again demonstrates the band's uncommon capacity for beautiful melodies, in the same spirit as Flying Colors, with the shadow of Neal Morse (also a former member of Spock's Beard) not far away.
With this fifth album, Pattern Seeking Animals offers music that is both rich and accessible, oscillating between straightforward titles and tracks in which the band takes the time to develop its subject matter, always with a highly accomplished melodic concern in mind. The orchestrations and arrangements contribute fully to this richness, making “Friends of All Creatures” their most accomplished album to date. - Official website
