Since 2012, The Night Flight Orchestra has been regaling us with its good humor, taking us on a time machine of diverse influences: hard rock, AOR, pop, disco, rock, funk, FM, Abba, Journey, Kansas, Toto... are mixed in the shaker for an explosive and flashy (but sometimes a little indigestible) cocktail.
Let's start with a change in line-up. Keyboardist Richard Larsson, who has been in the band since the first album, has left. But it was an even more painful tragedy that befell Björn Strid: guitarist David Andersson, co-founder and long-time partner - not least in their main project Soilwork - died in 2022, aged just 47. These two crucial losses could have ended The Night Flight Orchestra's existence, but their singer decided to carry on.
Sparkling keyboards first take over on 'Stratus' before the guitar teleports us into 1980s FM hard rock with Björn Strid's generous vocals, doubled by female backing vocals on the fearsomely effective choruses. Night Flight Orchestra has never aimed for originality, but for effectiveness, and this is by no means an unworthy or easy mission.
It's hard not to fall for 'Shooting Velvet', the soothing 'Paloma' or 'Cosmic Tide' with its demented keyboard solo: Björn Strid is an expert in evil melodies. Admittedly, a few tracks in the middle of the album may sound like duplicates, despite their qualities ('Miraculous' or 'Give Us The Moon', whose keyboard melody sounds like a reworking of Donna Summer's 'Hot Stuff'). But the Swedes have an emotional sequence in store for us with 'Runaways', which manages to surprise pleasantly, buoyed by sensitive keyboards that Toto would not have disowned and a muscular guitar solo. The last track even takes on some progressive overtones...
Despite the loss of its historic members, The Night Flight Orchestra continues on its way, offering an explosive cocktail of rock, disco, hard rock, AOR... The whole is somewhat copious, but the result is above all effective, and the mission is accomplished. - Official website
