It only took one album and three EPs for Kanonenfieber to make a name for themselves on the extreme scene. Noise, the only constant member, formed the band after reading his great-grandfather's diary to talk about the First World War through the writings of soldiers at the front. With “Die Urkatastrophe”, he aims to give an insight into the horror experienced by the soldiers, and to show the extent to which this war has left its mark on the history of mankind.
The album cover expresses the idea of the nightmare experienced during the hostilities. The intro is in keeping with the tone, with excerpts from speeches and the gloomy idea of leaving for the front. Then Kanonenfieber unleashes an intense death thrash. The power they unleash makes no bones about it, and draws us into the spirit of insane, all-out war. Noise's German vocals are often frightening. Between snarls, anger and total rage, it carries the tracks along in blood-curdling intensity.
On rare occasions, the rhythm calms down. Through melodic breaks, melancholy, despair and sadness take over. Kanonenfieber makes us feel what soldiers experience between two offensives during a precarious calm with enormous fortitude. War grips the gut as martial force takes over to make the listener understand the hell he's in. Ausblutungsschlacht' and its Verdun chorus, a perfect concentration of the band's chilling art. And then there's the emotionally powerful acoustic finale with its clear vocals, like a salute to the survivors of hell.
“Die Urkatastrophe” is a record of rare strength. Kanonenfieber succeeds in transcribing into music the horror of a conflict that has few equals in human history. We can only applaud the band for this important reminder. - Official website
