"“Nightmares As Extensions Of The Waking State” is a continuation of what Katatonia has produced so far, although it is more technical and less direct than their previous works."

With a career spanning almost 35 years and now 14 albums under their belt, Katatonia can be considered a rock dinosaur. The departure of one of its founders, Anders Nyström, before recording “Nightmares as Extensions of the Waking State” had no particular impact on this band, which always seems to have something to say.
While Katatonia's music remains as personal as ever, offering a kind of dark heavy rock that is sometimes sad, often melancholic, the band is not content to simply reproduce a formula it initiated 30 years ago. More technical and experienced than in its early days but less direct than on its previous works, Katatonia offers us ten varied tracks that exude craftsmanship. The band is as comfortable with progressive-style tracks like “Thrice” as it is with intimate ballads like “Efter Solen,” both of which are quite similar to what Porcupine Tree has offered in the past.
Each track develops its own atmosphere, nervous on the more metal-oriented ‘The Liquid Eye’, heavy and dramatic on ‘Wind Of No Change’, almost soul/jazz on ‘Departure Trails’, progressive on ‘Thrice’ but also on ‘Lilac’, a composition that has the particularity of being divided into several distinct parts. But where the band really excels is in the alternation of moods within a single track, shifting in an instant from tranquility to feverishness, from crystalline sounds to saturation (‘Warden’, ‘Temporal’).
“Nightmares as Extensions of the Waking State” is not an album that stands out in Katatonia's well-structured discography. The characteristic color and homogeneity of its music are once again its strength as well as its weakness, as boredom can sometimes set in when you tune out and switch from attentive listening to more casual listening. Nevertheless, Katatonia presents us with a very rich, well-arranged, and balanced album, with just the right amount of riffs and guitar solos, highlighting excellent drumming that is as eclectic as it is timely, which music lovers should appreciate for what it is worth. - Official website
