Z-Cocoon is a power trio. This detail is not insignificant, as it says (almost) everything about a band that gets straight to the point without asking too many questions. You can easily imagine the Canadians turning up, plugging in their instruments—guitar, bass, drums—and laying it on thick. No preliminaries. Relaxed but gruff. Their stoner rock, steeped in dirty blues, is just the same: rough and hairy. Quite a program!

Mark Zolla holds the helm with his voice like a duck with a cold. He's not a great singer, but this type of greasy, scruffy rock suits this shortcoming very well. At his side, his two companions lay down a rhythm section that's just right, cast in oil.

The latest milestone in a messy discography, “Angels” is only an EP. Three tracks in barely fifteen minutes is not much, and certainly not enough to see Z-Cocoon's popularity rise, especially since the Quebecers don't show much diversity. The effort, modest as it is, is nonetheless appealing. Mired in muddy, ramshackle blues rock, “Dr. Crane” never gets off the ground, with its adulterated echoes of Black Label Society.

A little more lively and making you want to tap your feet, “Truth Don't Matter” is not without substance, but it lacks depth.  The longest track on the album at over 6 minutes, “For My Life” also stands out as the most doom-laden and therefore the most enjoyable. Unhealthy and creeping, it sinks heavily into the murky waters of the Bayous, with vicious guitar and rhythms numbed by twilight humidity. As a result, the band would be well advised to dig deeper into this swampy groove, which suits their sullen nonchalance so well.

Another brick in the wall, "Angels” proves that Z-Cocoon remains the solid craftsman of a stocky, no-frills bluesy stoner rock.

PROGRESSIVE ROCK - Euphoria Station's “Smoking Gun” is less progressive than before, but still offers a sonic journey through the desert expanses beloved of American westerns.

THRASH - With “Songs Of Last Resort,” The Haunted has released an album with quite a few good moments, but also some less effective, generic tracks.
