Author of two remarkable albums under his own name, Gabriel Keller is unfortunately one of those artists whose talent is inversely proportional to the recognition and audience he receives. So the opportunity to open for Lazuli at La Rotonde in Villeurbanne on June 29, 2024 was the perfect chance to bask in the glow of the Gardois, who have followed a more or less similar path. This recorded concert is now being released a year later under the banner Gabriel Keller and Friends.
Despite its short duration, the performance offers a set list exploring Gabriel Keller's two albums, as well as a track (‘Ma Rimeraie’) from his previous adventure with Hegoa, performed in an acoustic version and providing a welcome breather in the middle of the concert. As with his studio productions, the content here is extremely varied, and the sequencing and balance of the different tracks, which allow for variations in both intensity and emotion, are particularly noteworthy.
With a band performing without a keyboard, there could have been a strong desire to “wow” the audience in order to convey a lot of energy, especially since Gabriel Keller's music has enough dynamic passages, sometimes flirting with metal (this is particularly the case here with ‘Nothing Human’ and ‘Honey’). Fortunately, our artist did not fall into this trap, and this live performance offers us all the variety of sound, intensity, and rhythm found on his albums. In this respect, “Le Chant du Cygne” is the perfect summary of this richness, taking the audience on a slow, disturbing climb before Charlotte Gagnor's enormous vocal performance captivates the audience, who are undoubtedly won over.
Confirming the quality of his studio productions, Gabriel Keller proves once again that he is an artist who counts on the (too small) French progressive scene. His shimmering universe thus successfully passes the test of the stage, in the hope that this testimony will open the doors to the recognition he needs to continue his artistic activity. Highly recommended purchase. - Official website
