We met Gilles Snowcat five years ago when his album “You've Been Unboxing” was released. The former Awaken keyboardist offered funky atmospheres open to all winds and carried by a warm and sensual voice. This new album, which follows an EP recorded three years ago (“Last Summer On The Beach”), will give us the opportunity to see if Gilles Snowcat always lands on his feet.

Right from the start, the Belgian keyboardist and singer, surrounded by his small troupe of accomplished musicians, lays his cards on the table. The journey begins with the uninhibited reggae track “Something New In Waterloo,” which follows on from the previous EP as if the work were continuing healthily without being eroded by time. The atmosphere is groovy, carried by a voice reminiscent of both Leonard Cohen and Mick Farren, inviting you to join her on a deckchair at a seaside resort frozen in time (“Monaco 1972”). The senses are heightened when the languid Adriana Dath purrs with pleasure on “Tiny Little Icecubes.”

Some moments are a little more serious, such as on another duet, ‘Pandan Smash Amaretto’, this time featuring Ana Cozman, in which a melancholic piano brings the listener closer to the performers. However, this intimacy and nostalgia are dispelled by the next track, ‘At The Marzipan Bar’, which clears the clouds with a heavy dose of country... The last track, “Coast Avenue Drive,” is a tour de force, an exciting journey in which the guitar, saxophone, and a few piano notes take us through winding corridors that are always bathed in light. Unfortunately, there isn't another track of the caliber of “Tiffany” to prolong the pleasure.

Gilles Snowcat continues his solo ascent with an album of reasonable length, rich and shimmering textures. Recommended for all music lovers who enjoy sonic journeys.
