Darkwater is a band that comes straight from Sweden. Led by the guitarist Markus Sigfridsson (7days, Harmony), the band was formed in 2003 to play a few gigs in this Nordic land, before tackling the composition of its first album " Calling The Earth To Witness ", on the new Swedish label Ulterium Records.
At the first listening, Darkwater surprises by its maturity. The sounds work in a modern register, where intensity and finesse resonate in unison. Moreover, the mixing was entrusted to Peter Seather, notably known for his work with A.C.T. The general atmosphere is borrowed from a progressive metal of high quality, worthy of the best productions of the flagships of the genre, namely Dream Theater, Beyond Twilight or Evergrey. The influence of these bands on Darkwater's music is visible, but sufficiently assimilated not to fall into plagiarism.
The 8 tracks combine energy and refinement, supported by a singer/guitarist with a clear and powerful tone. Markus Sigfridsson, the backbone of this band, puts all his knowledge on each guitar note. The other members do not limit themselves to the roles of simple extras, by showing dynamism and originality. The rhythm section does an excellent job, bringing a good dose of creativity in its interventions. As for the keyboards, they enhance the compositions with various reflections, reinforcing the very sophisticated arrangements.
It is in this climate that "All Eyes On Me" comes in, aerial keyboards on guitars with a big sound as a preamble, syncopated rhythmic followed by the song in total osmosis with the released atmosphere. The refrain ends up quite naturally, before the sequence of sumptuous breaks punctuated with brilliant soli. Hardly time to recover and here comes "Again", a track full of nuance that confirms the excellent dispositions of this young band to create melodic and complex musical pieces. The quality of the interpretation remains constant throughout the compositions, always rich in breaks and melodic and tenacious choruses. As a proof, "Habit", which reveals all the imaginative and technical assets that this formation can generate. This title is quite representative of its skills.
With "Calling The Earth To Witness", Darkwater has just released one of the best productions of the year in the progressive metal field. From start to end, this album proves to be a real success. No doubt that these young musicians will be the subject of much discussion relatively soon. - Official website
