""Physicist" is a real battlefield where the aggressive and violent side of a Strapping Young Lad and the more atmospheric aspects of Devin Townsend's solo projects clash."

If the boundary between Strapping Young Lad and Devin Townsend's personal project was until then clear, it seems much less obvious when listening to this "Physicist". Like the most recent "The New Black" under the SYL aegis, "Physicist" is situated in the middle of the two facets of schizophrenic genius...
Indeed, whereas in any Devin Townsend's "solo" project, listeners are offered a so-called atmospheric or even progressive metal with melodious vocal harmonies that fly away with the breath of ethereal instrumental layers, in contrast to Strapping Young Lad, one is here confronted with a crushing metal with exacerbated aggressiveness, a real wall of sound embellished with wild howls!
In this respect "Physicist" turns out to be a real battlefield where these two forces meet; the blue and calm of "Biomech" / the red and wild of "City"! On one side, we are attacked by very typical Strapping Young Lad tracks like "Death", "Devoid" or "The Complex" with a more melodic and less screamed vocal... On the other side, we are carried away by tracks in the line of what Devin Townsend does in solo like "Jupiter", the monumental 10 minutes long "Planet Rain" or the finale "The Forgotten", an atmospheric title with destructured rhythms!
To sum up, while Devin Townsend's genius is evident in his individuality, it becomes much less convincing when his two diametrically opposed facets meet on the same work! - Official website
