Two years after "Somewhere In Time", Iron Maiden releases a new album, "Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son". For this record, the line-up remains unchanged around its charismatic leader, Steve Harris. This was the last album of Iron Maiden's golden age with Dickinson-Harris-Murray-Smith-Mc Brain, Smith leaving the band in 1989 for 10 years. Moreover, for the first time in its history, Iron Maiden releases a concept album, inspired by a book, "The Seventh Son" by Orson Scott Card, where it is about a child with supernatural powers.

Ignoring the critics, the band continued on the path traced with "Somewhere". The synthesizers arrive from the first title "Moonchild" - what surprised the fans of the time - which opens the album in a very powerful way; co-written by Smith and Dickinson, this track is quite symbolic of the band's openness with its grandiloquent side. "Infinite Dreams" is a typical Steve Harris track, very epic, quite progressive and very catchy thanks to the talent of a Dickinson in a state of grace.

"Can I Play With Madness" is the first single and it is clear that it was composed with this in mind. It's a short, simple song with a catchy chorus. "The Evil That Men Do", the second single, again allows Bruce to show off his vocal power with some high pitched parts. It is again a track of a rare effectiveness carried by a concrete chorus. The eponymous track, "Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son", is the progressive piece of the album because of its length (almost 10 minutes) and its rather complex musical construction; Steve Harris signs once again a real bravery piece.

"The Prophecy" is at first more anecdotal after such a sequence but reveals itself after several listenings in particular thanks to a final acoustic part of any beauty. "The clairvoyant", third single, is still an absolute hit, famous for its very inspired bass intro, and its catchy melodic side. "Only The Good Die Young" closes the album in beauty before a return to the initial intro. The musicians are at their best, with Smith and Murray showing an unequalled touch, Harris being as always imperial and Nicko asserting himself as a great drummer.

Iron Maiden offers here a record with no downtime and only great songs. The whole is enhanced by the production of the faithful Matin Birch who ensures a very clear and powerful sound, giving even more strength to the opus. "Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son" is the album of the consecration, the disc is number 1 of the sales of the band, a sumptuous tour will follow (nearly 100 000 people in Donnigton) and it remains simply a classic of the 80's Metal.
