"Love At First Sting" is the fourth album of the Matthias Jabs era, which translates into the rise of the band. And while the latter seems to have reached the top with "Blackout", his previous opus, the 5 hard rockers from Hanover do it again two years later to serve us an even more mature work.
From the very first second, Matthias' guitar rips the air to open the curtain on one of the band's future classics, 'Bad Boys Running Wild', followed by his big brother 'Rock You Like A Hurricane', little masterpieces of melodic hard-rock with finely chiselled choruses. Although Scorpions has lost none of its trademark efficiency, it has developed a sense of melody still further. It develops even more this sense of melody which already characterizes its discographic history to provide it with a commercial touch whose result will be immediately felt. These first two tracks are only the first examples, the essential 'Big City Night' and the interplanetary ballad 'Still Loving You' complete this royal square whose success has not waned over the decades. Everything has already been said about the monumental 'Still Loving You', so there's no need to add more, except to ask the question: isn't the monstrous success of this ballad also responsible for the hollow period that the German quintet will have gone through a few years later? Indeed, by trying too hard to reproduce the same recipe, Scorpions will momentarily lose its soul.
But let's get back to the content of this legendary album, because beyond the four hits previously mentioned, it is also completed by five other tracks that deserve to be mentioned. Starting with 'Coming Home', a tribute to the fans that begins as a ballad and accelerates brutally to take us into a whirlwind of riffs supported by a particularly efficient rhythmic. The Same Thrill' comes next to drive the nail in with a style reminiscent of 'Dynamite' from the previous album. In the series of comparisons, 'I'm Leaving You', reminds us of 'Arizona' also present on 'Blackout', without sinking into self-plagiarism.
Sandwiched between 'Big City Night' and 'Still Loving You', 'As Soon As The Good Times Roll' and 'Crossfire' contribute to the lull at the end of the album, while showing a strong identity. The former oscillates between verses with syncopated riffs and a chorus encouraging optimism, while the latter is a pacifist plea with a military-like drum roll.
Scorpions has thus managed to find the perfect balance between hard-rock dynamism and melody that will grant the group a commercial success rarely reached by an album officiating in this musical style, while also bringing them a recognition from the metal community. This is what we call a must-have album. - Official website
