After a first opus that was anything but amateurish, Aerosmith released a new album of great maturity only one year later. It remained in the US charts for many weeks, even though it was not the most accessible album of the Boston gang.

A first shout from Steven Tyler and it all starts with 'Same Old Song And Dance', a fairly immediate track fleshed out by horns and a saxophone solo answering Joe Perry's lit one. We will have to wait the bluesy rock'n'roll 'Pandora's Box', last track on the album, to get another obvious structure once again. Indeed, without giving in to convoluted progressive music, Aerosmith take great pleasure in proving to us that they are not only great composers but also excellent musicians. If the vicious 'Lord Of The Tights' and the soaring 'Spaced' are essentially muscular and psychedelic, their structures remain affordable.

On the other hand, 'Woman Of The World' offers Led Zeppelin-like influences after a rather folk intro. The solo shared by Tyler on harmonica and Perry is well worth a listen. As for 'Seasons Of Wither', after a faux live intro, it takes us for more than 5 minutes in weightlessness, driven by Steven Tyler's vocal performance, all in mastery and emotion.

Finally, 'S.O.S (Too Bad)' and its fusion-style groove completes the 8-track list, along with the Yardbirds cover 'Train Kept A Rollin'' which Aerosmith manages to transcend. The performance of the rhythm section led by Tom Hamilton and Joey Kramer is no stranger to this. Indeed, they provide a foundation that allows the prowess of Tyler and Perry to shine through. It would also be unfair to ignore the role of Brad Whitford who brings both an inimitable edge to the guitars and a consequent weight to the rhythmic.

Steven Tyler gives an impressive performance on "Get Your Wings", his voice having gained in warmth and power. The screams and tremolos are always used to good effect to flesh out an emotion that is always present. As for Joe Perry, he delivers a collection of top of the range choruses, as powerful as elegant. Aerosmith is now part of unavoidable Rock bands, innovative and accessible, and this after only two albums. A legend is being born!

OTHER REVIEWS
ALTER BRIDGE: BlackBird (2007)
GRUNGE - For the fifth time, Tremonti and his henchmen offers us some hits but are not moving the band beyond the already traced paths with Creed.
RADIOHEAD: In Rainbows (2007)
POP - Good news for lovers of the romantic pop of "Ok computer", Radiohead is back with a more stripped down, more accessible album, but not simplistic, and this is probably where the strength of "In rainbows" lies.
