"The band's very first album, "Bon Jovi" has not aged too much and remains a beautiful testimony of the beginnings of one of the legends of Hard Rock FM."

The story of Bon Jovi could serve as an example of the famous "American Dream". Indeed, the young Jon Bongiovi is employed as a sweeper and courier in his cousin Toni's studio, but he dreams of becoming a Rock star. His various meetings with Bruce Springsteen, Aerosmith or Mick Jagger and his boundless motivation will eventually give him the opportunity to record a single (in Toni's studio, of course!) with a few session musicians, including a certain Hugh Mc Donald, bass player who replaced Alec Jon Such since he left the band. This single called 'Runaway' quickly becomes a real hit and Bon Jovi succeeds in setting up his own band. With his friend David Bryan, they hire bassist Alec Jon Such and drummer Tico Torres who finally introduces him to Richie Sambora who, despite a bad first contact, manages to convince Jon that he is the right guitarist for him. Bon Jovi is born and can record his first eponymous album, which was about to be called "Tough Talk" at first.

For an album recorded in 1984, "Bon Jovi" keeps a sound that has aged well and the vast majority of the tracks still hold up without sounding ridiculous. Indeed, the 5 from New Jersey work in a very dynamic and well executed Hard FM. 'Runaway' is re-recorded for the occasion and opens the album with a simple keyboard, joined by a slamming and catchy riff.

The rest of the album remains on the same dynamic and only the mid tempo 'She Don't Know Me' and the power ballad 'Love Lies' bring some respite, even if the latter reserves some passages a little fast for an exercise of this kind. It's hard to pick out a track among this set of a level rarely reached for a first album evolving in this particular style. The ingredients that continue to make the success of the band, namely the worked and omnipresent choirs, the keyboards of David Bryan ("Love Lies") and the soli full of feeling of Richie Sambora ("Roulette") are already in place, without forgetting the master of the place and his unjustly underestimated voice, at the same time powerful and emotional, hot and aggressive and already perfectly mastered and assured ("Shot Through The Heart").

The United States, which was waiting for the succession of bands such as Foreigner or Journey, will reserve a phenomenal success to this album and to those which will follow, and if for some, this craze could seem a little excessive, it is undeniable that "Bon Jovi" acts as a reference in Hard FM, which is not negligible for a first work.

PROGRESSIVE ROCK - With "Not As Good As The Book", The Tangent definitely assures its place in the big league of the current progressive rock... and maybe even a little more...
KHYMERA: The Greatest Wonder (2008)
A.O.R. - Between classy Hard FM and AOR, "The Greatest Wonder" doesn't reinvent the genre but nevertheless regroups a good number of hits with catchy and heady choruses.
