"Despite the lack of success it received upon its release, "Renegade" is a major album in the career of Thin Lizzy and its creator, Phil Lynott."

The beginning of the 80's is a dark time for Phil Lynott, the charismatic frontman of Thin Lizzy. In the middle of his girlfriend's separation, the leader of the band, in which the relationship between Snowy White and his colleagues was stormy to say the least, released in 1981 this album that was a flop. It has to be said that it was a little bit out of place in the metal landscape of the time. It was not muscular enough in comparison with Iron Maiden, Saxon and Def Leppard. The majesty of the work seduced only the die-hards because of its musical eclecticism and the too rare hard rock sounds of the opus.
The synth start of 'Angel Of Death' followed by its powerful and opening riff is very dark. The lyrics where it is only about past and future holocausts, death (Lynott's father's) and disasters mark the listener deeply. The next track, 'Renegade', is autobiographical... The start is less dark but the sadness prevails with an alternation of calm passages and angry moments as a reminder of the personality of Lynott. The man is not at ease in society and feels good only in solitude... It is a melodically magnificent track with breaks full of feeling.
The melodic slap that is 'Hollywood' puts the opus on the right way and it will not deviate any more. Here, we are dealing with a critique of Hollywood's antics. Lynott has never accepted the incomprehension of his artistic sensibility, nor their intolerance towards his "blunders" (cancelled concerts for example) due to a faltering health. The album continues the series of strong melodies with 'No One Told Him' in which Phil explains to a friend that she broke her boyfriend's heart. Serious lyrics indeed, but the rather bouncy melody takes us out of the gloom.
At the end of the album, we find 'It's Getting Dangerous', which evokes the ties that are loosened in friendships because of the passing of time. The entry is almost distressing and the lyrics do not reassure. The whole of the text, magnificent, rich and permeated with nostalgia shows us unequivocally that the problem in question torments its originator. The title, of an absolute musicality, makes shiver so much the emotion springs from all sides.
This unloved and yet so successful "Renegade" can almost be assimilated to a confidence that Phil Lynott would have liked to whisper in our ears. A kind of musical exposure. The tragic fate of the man who appears in filigree makes this work all the more poignant. - Official website
