"Legendary Tales", the debut album from Italy's Rhapsody, fulfilled many metalheads' expectations. Never before had the concept of Metal combined with classical music and heroïc fantasy reached such a paroxysm, at the risk of becoming caricatural and making some people smile. It was a risky gamble for two of the band's stalwarts, Alex Staropoli and Luca Turilli, but the result exceeded all expectations.
"Legendary Tales" lays the foundations for a new vision of Symphonic Metal. The album immerses the listener in a world of magic, knights and epic battles. The album's lyrical themes revolve around a mythical kingdom and a hero's quest.
While the Metal substance of the music leans towards melodic speed close to Helloween, it is coupled with classical arrangements, interludes and medieval atmospheres. Rhapody's music is a combination of high-pitched vocals, technical guitar solos, fast rhythms with double pedals galore and grandiose orchestrations, creating a cinematic musical experience.
There are some excellent compositions on this opus, such as 'Land of Immortals', a majestic orchestral introduction, 'Warrior of Ice', which sums up the content of this "Legendary Tales" in one title, with its mix of epic symphonic passages and intense metal riffs, and 'Queen of the Dark Horizons', with its haunting melodies and atmospheric arrangements.
A rather unusual album for its time, "Legendary Tales" received a very reserved reception on its release, and was often mocked by the French press. It's true that the epic, that of the Emerald Sword, is a little naive, and that there's room for improvement. However, the story adds a real plus to the whole and makes you want to listen to the sequel. What's more, on this album Rhapsody demonstrates incredible maturity. "Legendary Tales" is a real treat for listeners with a taste for symphonic metal and a passion for imaginary worlds. - Official website
