We are in the early 90's when a fresh wind blows on the American rock landscape. It was caused by the wings of a young band coming from the South, bringing on their back a Rock loaded with blues, soul, references to the roots of hard rock and an unavoidable Southern accent.

The Black Crowes are led by two brothers with strong characters. On vocals, Chris splashes this album with all his class with his hoarse voice that can be provocative, aggressive or moving. As for Rich on guitar, he has the gift of proposing riffs of an extraordinary authenticity that would not leave a certain Jimmy Page insensitive.

The Black Crowes are able to vary the tempos without ever missing their target. The rhythmic tracks are irresistible with notably the catchy 'Jealous Again' or the slightly syncopated 'Could I've Been So Blind'. And in this field, the Robinson brothers are as much able to press on the gas pedal as on the percussive 'Thick'N'Thin', as to weigh down their music as on 'Struttin' Blues' with Aerosmith accents.

But if there is a field where Chris is untouchable, it is well in the register of the ballads in which he releases a staggering emotion. Just listen to the sumptuous 'She Talks To Angel' and you will understand what an exceptional singer he is. On 'Sister Luck', the riff is reminiscent of some Guns'n'Roses ballads. As for "Seeing Things", its particularly slow tempo and its layers of organs form a soft mattress on which Chris comes to deposit a performance all in sensitivity.

It is therefore difficult to find a first work as accomplished as this "Shake Your Money Maker" with a subtle and balanced dosage. The Black Crowes will not need to wait for several albums to impose themselves as essential figures of a Southern Blues Rock both anchored in the present and proudly displaying its roots.
