In 1976, 'Leftoverture' was released, an album that is still terribly effective and often referred to by today's great bands that have nothing left to prove, such as Dream Theater to name but a few.
On this album we obviously find the mega-hit 'Carry On Wayward Son' that every curious progressive rock fan has heard at least once in his life. But once you've been listening to this track with such joy, the best is yet to come. Kansas, as he will be used to during a good part of his career, alternates the basic rock passages with original and very polished ones, as much in their musical construction as in the research of sounds. The result is a captivating album from start to end, extremely well interpreted and in which the pervasive presence of the violin adds an original touch to the entire set.
At a time when many musicians were positioning themselves on a resolutely rock, or even hard, style, or on a more experimental one as Yes or King Crimson did, Kansas chose not to favour either of these two trends, which he did very well overall, even if several failures were to be regretted afterwards.
Almost 30 years later, no less than half of the tracks on "Leftoverture" were still part of the set-list of the last Kansas tour, proving how good this album is and how it hasn't changed at all. - Official website
