The Black Crowes is one of those bands that succeeded in offering a masterpiece on their first album. This kind of feat often puts the author under pressure for his next album. Despite their youth, the Robinson brothers, leaders of the band, seem to have perfectly managed the expectations, even if they took almost two years to polish their new opus.

Even if the whole thing still sounds Southern Rock, "The Southern Harmony And Musical Companion" shows an evolving band. The soul touch is put forward by a Chris Robinson in a state of grace, supported by female choruses of the best effect on several tracks ('Remedy'). But it's on the bluesy power ballad 'Sometimes Salvation' that the frontman reaches a peak, especially during the finale where his cries are overflowing with emotion. As for Rich, he offers us a small jewel of solo on this same title, proving in passing that the guitar strings can also translate intense feelings. It should be noted that his performance on this opus will earn him the recognition of several renowned specialized magazines.

Without being able to be classified in the progressive category, each title is of a false simplicity, being able as well to be endowed with a delicate and perfectly dosed rise in power ('Thorn In My Pride' where Steve Gorman's play is of a bewitching smoothness and precision), that of a convoluted structure as the heavy blues rock of 'Black Moon Creeping' passing cheerfully from an intro to the Cajun accents to a slamming and immediate chorus. To these structures comes to be added a variety of styles and tempi, dynamic and driving ('Sting Me'), moving and slightly psychedelic ('Bad Luck Blue Eyes Goodbye') or jumping ('Hotel Illness' with its twirling harmonica and its interventions of slide), to finish on the cover of an obscure title of Bob Marley ("Time Will Tell") that The Black Crowes appropriates while preserving its reggae groove.

With a richness abounding, succeeding in marrying hard-rock, blues-rock, southern-rock and soul, "The Southern Harmony And Musical Companion" is a musical and emotional journey through the south of the United States to which The Black Crowes invites us. This kind of journey from which you will not be able to leave unscathed.
